Dueling Champion, Charms Master, and Wizarding War Veteran:
Professor Filius Flitwick
With the Second Wizarding War finally over, people now have time to reflect on the events of the last few years. Dueling was, and still is, a useful skill, and although most people don’t know this, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry’s Charms Master, Filius Flitwick, was quite the dueling champion in his younger days. To find out more, I decided to speak to the half-goblin professor and ask him some questions about the lesser known events and skills of his life.
As Filius resides at Hogwarts School, we arranged to meet at The Three Broomsticks, and as I’m entering, I see him at a small table, two mugs of Butterbeer waiting. His half-goblin origins are an outstanding characteristic that is hard to look past: He is very short in stature, though he has sturdy build. Unlike many goblins we meet at Gringotts, Filius has a warm smile and a kind demeanour, making him very approachable. It is easy to see why he is such a favourite amongst students at Hogwarts.
After a bit of small talk, I get straight to the point. “Professor, recently there have been some rumors circulating that you were quite a skilled duelist during your youth. Is there truth to that, or are these just wild tales?”
The fact that I am half-goblin caused my opposition to underestimate me.
Filius Flitwick
Flitwick chuckles momentarily before he gives his answer. “Indeed, I was, and nobody expected me to win the first time I was in a duel. The fact that I am half-goblin caused my opposition to underestimate me, I would be lying if I said that didn’t give me an edge! What would you like to know about those times? Hopefully I remember details, it was quite a long time ago!”
having your comrades back is of the utmost importance!
Filius Flitwick
“Well, there were people saying you were going right up against You-know-who in the Battle of Hogwarts. What was that like?”
Flitwick purses his lips, contemplating before he speaks. “It was terrifying, but I wasn’t fighting alone. Professors McGonagall and Slughorn were fighting along with me.” He seems to want to say more, but decides not to. “I think that when dueling in that kind of situation, working together is most important, having your comrades back is of the utmost importance!”
“What do you think is the most useful spell for dueling?” I ask, and Filius tilts his head to one side thoughtfully. I imagine he is running through an entire list of spells that he has at his disposal.
“That would depend on what you are aiming to accomplish with your duel or spell,” he replies thoughtfully. “If you want to neutralize the magical threat, Expelliarmus is your best bet. If you do want to harm an enemyโbut not fatally, Stupefy is a great choice. If you want to stop a pursuant, Incarcerous is the spell to go with. The point is that no one spell is the spell to know.”
“That’s good advice,” I agree. “Another question: What made you pursue Charms instead of becoming an Auror or teaching Defense Against the Dark Arts? That seems the more likely profession given your past history?”
I was not particularly brave in my youth.
Filius Flitwick
Flitwick breaks into a grin. “Well, I was not particularly brave in my youth. I stuck to the shadows until I left school and only ended up in duels because people thought I was an easy target; it was defense. I always loved Charms in school, and there are so many beautiful ones. I wanted to know them and teach them to others. That’s intrinsically who I am at heartโa teacher.”
“What is your favorite charm to show students?” I query, keeping on that line of questioning.
“The stories I could tell you about students’ first time with Wingardium Leviosa or Accio…” The wizard chuckles. “Remember what happened in your first class? One of the Gryffindors caused everyones’ hair to become full of static. Those are the moments I cherishโthe joy and laughter of teaching.”
I remember the incident, and laugh along with my old teacher. That boy was an abysmal wizard, which became apparent during that lesson. “Oh yes! That was a fun day.”
I think my favorite charm is Expecto Patronum.
Filius Flitwick
He quickly gets back on topic. “However, I think my favorite charm is Expecto Patronum. Usually students don’t attempt it till their fifth or sixth year, but when they master it, nothing can surpass seeing the happiness on their face as they watch their guardian surround them, and nothing can surpass my pride as a teacher either.”
“And what is your Patronus, if you don’t mind my asking?” I ask eagerly. What a thing to know about one of the most powerful wizards in Britain!
“I first formed it in my final year of school,” he begins, a look of reminiscence on his face. “It became a viper.”
“Quick, surprisingly tough and dangerous, as you have proven yourself to be over the years,” I observe, smiling at a teacher who I am not afraid to say was a favourite of mine.
He waves me off, good naturedly. “I just work hard and learn everything that comes my way. That’s why I am the Head of Ravenclaw house.”
“And how long have you been at that post?” I ask.
I just work hard and learn everything that comes my way. That’s why I am the Head of Ravenclaw house.
Filius Flitwick
“Longer than I care to admit,” Flitwick replies with a laugh. “You can’t expect me to answer that any further than that. I am a very old wizard!” Filius face lights up as he laughs off the question, refusing to offer any concrete numbers.
With no further questions, I stand up and shake the professor’s hand. “Thank you so much for speaking with me, Sir.”
“It has been my pleasure,” he smiles. “Let me know, and we can schedule a follow up. I’m sure you have plenty more questions you can get together!”
And here it is, a short interview on one of Hogwarts’ most beloved teachers. For more on different types of charms, turn to page 4. For more staff interviews, turn to page 7.
Charming Charms to Charm your Teammates, Headmistresses and Judges
Bonjour, everyone, it’s Headmistress Hope from Beauxbatons! This is round two of the competition, and so you all will need your copies of The Standard Book of Spells by Miranda Goshawk.
Charms is the core of most of the magic you will learn during your school years, despite the fact that some people, notably Augusta Longbottom, see it as a softer subject. Some of the most important spells you will learn will be charms, such as the Wand Lighting Charm (Lumos), the Levitation Charm (Wingardium Leviosa) and the Disarming Charm (Expelliarmus). Filius Flitwick, one of the more popular Hogwarts Professors teachers in this subject, and is the head of Ravenclaw House. Flitwick often lets the students play games in class when he is unable to get them to concentrate.
Proceed to your assignment now, and remember to swish and flick!
Theme in Charms
Each school has a different theme, these themes are based on some of the most popular and important charms! Now, we don’t want you to be pigeon holed by these themes, we want them to open up your imagination, and take your stories to dizzying new heights!
Wingardium Leviosa – Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry
This theme is not simply about levitating feathers, in many ways; Wingardium Leviosa means peaceful floating or flying! Think about what your characters need to find serenity and peacefulness! Harry might literally take flight on his Firebolt to get his peace and quiet, but maybe Neville Longbottom prefers being in Green House Five, caring for numerous magical plants? Think about your character;what would bring serenity to them and why do they need it?
Lumos – Ilvermorny School of Magic
Lumos is about more than a wand lighting charm, and just including that will not get you theme points. Think a little deeper about this commonly used spell โ bring light into the darkness. This could be a character that is in an emotionally dark place, and someone needs to bring them out into the light? Maybe Hogwarts is in perpetual darkness and no one knows what to do โ except the character of your choice, of course. It could be about Light defeating Dark. The possibilities are endless.
Patronus Charm – Beauxbatons Academy of Magic
The Patronus Charm isn’t all shiney animals, you know? There is that special magic of the Patronus so when a Witch or Wizard experiences life-altering love, it will change! Look at how a characters life is completely altered by their love for someone else! This can be romantic, platonic, or familial โ but it has to change lives!
Alohomora – The Durmstrang Institute of Magic
Alohomora is unlocking the door, solving the puzzle, and finding something that was hidden. I think I like the mystery of what is behind a locked door, and that’s why we picked this for a theme. Write about secrets or hidden things, about revealing and finding. This theme can be about finding material objects, unveiling truths or self-discovery.
Confundo – Mahoutokoro School for Magical Learning
Confundo, what can I say, it’s so confusing. Are your characters causing confusion so they can accomplish a task? Are your characters under the influence of a potion or spell that means things aren’t really making sense right now? Or maybe there is a less magical substance that causes confusion, Firewhiskey perhaps?
We had only one submission to Grammar School this round, and as such Sonya-Heather-DiVito submitted and was able to earn her team some more points. She wrote a drabble about Regulus Black, it was a moving piece detailing Sirius’ feelings about his brother when he finally returned to No. 12 Grimmauld place. The story can be found here: The boy who was forgotten It deserves a read and a review! To submit your entry you will need to submit to FF.Net as usual, and then post the link to this thread with your school, year details, and wordcount

Round 2 – Complex Sentences
Hello, and welcome to round two of the Grammar School Challenge. This round, we will be looking at sentence structure and ensure that we structure those more complex sentences correctly.
As usual, you have a word limit of 500 minimum and 900 maximum, and there is a 10% grace either way. You can earn your school up to 10 points, and you can write about anything in the Wizarding World. While you will be judged on plot, primarily you will be judged on spelling, grammar, punctuation and one chosen techniqueโcomplex sentences. Below is an article on complex sentences to help you accomplish the task!
Judging criteria
Spelling – ?/2
Punctuation – ?/2
Grammar – ?/2
Sentence Structure -?/2
Plot – ?/2
What Is a Complex Sentence?
A complex sentence has one independent clause and at least one dependent clause.
An independent clause (unlike a dependent clause) can stand along as a sentence. For this excercise, I would like you to take great consideration with your work to ensure that.
When the cake is brown (this is the dependent clause as it cannot stand alone), (sometimes a comma is used to seperate clauses) take it out of the oven. (This is an independent clause, as it can stand alone as a sentence).
Examples of Complex Sentences
Below are examples of complex sentences. In each example, the independent clause is highlighted.
- Both the cockroach and the bird would get along very well without us, although the cockroach would miss us most. (Joseph Wood Krutch, 1893-1970)
- Leave while you can.
- When a distinguished by elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right. When he states that something is impossible, he is very probably wrong. (Arthur C. Clarke)
Four Types of Sentence Structure
A complex sentence is one of four main sentence structures, all of which are shown below. In these examples, the independent clauses are italicized.
A complex sentence has an independent clause and at least one dependent clause. For example:
- The human brain never stops working until you stand up to speak in public.
A ompound sentence has at least two independent clauses. For example:
- I always wanted to be somebody, but I should have been more specific. (Jane Wagner)
A simple sentence has just one independent clause. For example:
- Curiosity killed the cat
A compund-comples sentence has at least two independent clauses adn at least one dependent clause. For example:
- I stopped believing in Santa Claus when he asked for my autograph in a department store, but I still want to believe in him.
Dependent clauses begin with subordinating conjunctions. Below are some of the most common subordinating conjuctions:
- After
- although
- as
- because
- before
- even though
- if
- since
- thugh
- unless
- until
- when
- whenever
- whereas
- wherever
- while
a complex sentence joins an independent clause with one or more dependent clauses. The dependent clauses can go first in the sentence, followed by the independent clauses, as in the following:
Tip: When the dependent clause comes first, a comma should be used to seperate teh two clauses.
- Because Mary and Samantha arrived at the bus station before noon, I did not see them at the station.
- While he waited at the station, Joe realized that the train was late.
- After they left on the bus, Mary and Samantha realized that Joe was waiting at the train station.
Conversely, the indepedent clauses can go first in the sentence, followed by the dependent clause, as in the following:
Tip: When the independent clause comes first, a comma should not be used to seperate the two clauses.
- I did not see them at the station because Mary and Samantha arrived at the bus station before noon
- Joe realized that the train was late while he waited at the train station.
- Mary and Samantha realised that Joe was waiting at the station after they left on the bus.
Complex sentences are more effective than compound sentences because a complex sentence indicates clearer and more specific realtionships between the main parts of the sentence. The word ‘before’, for instance, tells readers that one thing occurs before another. A word such as ‘although’ conveys a more complex relationship than a word such as ‘and’ conveys.
Houses Crest Competition Winner
We have had a few submissions for the Beauxbatons house crests, however, no others were designed. There was a great deal of thought put into the crests we received.
After the fiasco at the premiere of the International Wizarding School Championship where our beautiful school crests got destroyed, we asked our students for a little help to design new ones. With pride we now announce the winner of our little design challenge:
Winner of the Crest Competition is Year two Beauxbatons Student Anne Aquila! Her wonderful design was made with passion for detail and she wrote a wonderful description of the elements represented in the crest as well! Thank you for your wonderful submission, Anne! You have earned 5 points for your team for round one.
The Crest of Beauxbatons

The Beauxbatons Academy of Magic is situated in the Pyrenees mountain range which forms the natural border between France and Spain. Though the exact location of the school is vague, based on the name of the school and the attire we may assume that it is in France.
The colour blue (the heraldic name being azure), symbolizes truth, strength, and loyalty. The two crossed swords symbolize strength, royalty and, since they point downwards, the Academy is at peace. In times of war, they would cross upwards. Violets are the national flowers of France and symbolize modesty, virtue, and faithfulness.
After consulting various sources, I have concluded that the Beauxbatons Academy does not have a publicly known motto. However, “Aedificare castellum astra” is a possibility, meaning “Build a castle of stars”. (Originally, I was going to go with ‘Qui vivra verra’ meaning ‘He/she who lives, shall see.’ But this motto, suggested by Paceco, was pretty cool. Kudos to you, mate!)
The above mentioned are the traditional aspects of the crest. I have, as I am prone to do so, given it a few modern tweaks!
This is our Creative Corner where we feature all kinds of artworks you send in. As not all our students are artistically gifted, we want to open up the Wizarding World News for other forms of creative expressions. You can go wild with your ideas as long as it fits within this section. Do you want to share a meme that’s absolutely hilarious? A quote from the HP Universe that you can’t get out of your head? A poem, drawing or photo? Contact your Heamistress, Headmistress Verity or The Wizarding School Competition Account and send them what you have to offer.
This is a beautiful poem from one of our Mahoutokoro students. She is currently on a student exchange in Durmstrang, and melancholy overcame her as she wished herself back to the peaceful island where Mahoutokoro is located. Instead of snow and icy winds, she dreamed of a light morning breeze and the skies above the vulcano where her school is located.

The Great Book Review
Durmstrang:
Must Be The Nargles by Shana852963
I had the most wonderful time reading the story Must Be the Nargles by Shana. The plot was quite intriguing, something I don’t believe I’ve read before. Luna, Ginny, and Hermione are three of my favorite people, so maybe that caused part of my liking for it.
To start, I like that Shana went post-Battle for the setting. It lets some extra emotions seep into the story, although not necessarily the ones you’d expect. I enjoyed Hermione’s thoughts that she couldn’t focus on her own work because she was so used to the boys pestering her for help with theirs. Its something I never thought of, and I’m glad someone did. I also love the moments with Luna and Rolf, which is a pairing that never ceases to leave me feeling their love.
The main plot, the girls and Hagrid going to Ilvermorny to help with the thestrals, is really good, although the reason the girls go is a bit contrived to me. I don’t think Hagrid would ever need help with the task, as he handled both a pack of Abraxan horses during the Triwizard Tournament and his half-giant brother Grawp, but it was good enough. Overall, the story is really great, and I can’t wait to receive more of Shana’s work to read.
Ilvermorny:
This week, I have had the pleasure of reading Stormy Weather, by the talented Joy Kathlyn. Seamlessly transitioning between the reflections of a frightened and lost student and the frantic searches for her siblings, this story depicts the heartwarming bonds between brothers and sisters.
Joy employs beautifully descriptive language to pull the reader into the heart of a storm. Her depiction of the landscape was so effective that I felt that I had been transported to the Japanese Islands. It also becomes clear early in the story that this author has done her research, seamlessly including Muggle as well as magical landmarks.
The three children come to life instantly, as if they were standing right beside you. Each has a unique character that is palpable as you read the story, and which adds depth to the plot as it progresses. The way these three characters interact is beautiful, and is enough to restore faith in even the coldest cynic that family ties are the strongest of all.
If you are looking for a heart-warming, family-centric story, this is the one for you!
Beauxbatons:
Purple Pen Pals by Vanilla Orchid
One morning in my WWN office, Purple Pen Pals by Vanilla Orchid was placed on my desk. I picked it up ready to write my review for the upcoming issue, and I found myself getting lost in the wonderful correspondence between two pen pals. The story spanned the years of her Hogwarts days, and her pen pal’s days at Ilvermorny. I read as these friends went through all the ups and downs of school together. The story flowed well, seamlessly going from year to year through the letters of two young girls, united by their similarities and their differences. There was a lighthearted wit to the story through the beginning and the middle of the story, building up to the moment when they would finally meet. The ending was emotional and brought the story to its close.
Lily was beautifully characterized, and as the years progressed, you could almost sense her maturing through the letters that she sent. She was written as a happy, bubbly child that grew into a joyful woman despite the ever growing darkness. You saw her emotion and her care for others, and she was true to Albus Dumbledore’s description of her: Uncommonly kind.
The original charactersโwho I will not name for fear of ruining a secret of the storyโwas somewhat quirky, and this made her instantly likable. I found that she reminded me of myself; she was emotionally vulnerable with her British Best Friend, feisty and always there to give her friend what she needed. The emotion at the end was poignant, and the original character really helped to bring the feelings home for the reader.
As I finished the story, I wiped the solitary tear from my cheek, thinking of how best to describe this tender piece of writing. Beautiful, sometimes witty, with an emotional finale. It is well worth the read, particularly if you are a fan of Lily Evans.
Mahoutokoro:
Mountain Lakes and Misread Signs by Emmeline Vance
From the very beginning, I was hooked. There were slight issues with tenses, but that didn’t deter me in the slightest as I found the work delightful to read. The thought and depth you put into this was astonishing and it made me eager to read more! Your attention to detail and storytelling really drove this fic. The description was phenomenal; I really felt as if I stepped right into the schools that you mentioned with your breathtaking ability to create worlds that we, as fans, have no real inkling of. The development of the characters was pleasant, as well and the relationship between characters was awesome, and I found a connection with them I had never known before.
Emmeline Vance did an outstanding job capturing my focus with her driven work, and I am greedy enough to ask, “Can I have more of this, and when will you continue it?” Truly amazing.
Hogwarts:
Sensations d’รฉtincelles by Silver Orbed Lioness
This round, a sensational story has been brought to us by the renowned French-British best selling author Silver Orbed Lioness.
The tragic heroine of her story speaks directly to the heart of every reader. The story is set in 18th century France and instantly, the reader is thrown so deeply and completely into it, so much so that you can almost feel the rain pouring down on our heroine, streaming down on your own face, you can almost taste it. The world described by Silver captures the reader with its rich history and heart wrenching drama. The setting is not only a facade for this beautiful story, but also pervades the language, thoughts and feelings of the characters and the plot that realistically fits into the world Silver has created. Not only are the details true to canon characteristics we know of the French Wizarding Schoolโwhere the majority of the plot takes placeโbut also there are French expressions included throughout the text, contribution to a feeling of wholeness and attention to detail that is exhilarating to read. No description was spared for the characters either, which seem as real and human as you or I without losing their individuality.
While the plot in the beginning is somewhat hard to grasp, as it skips in time and adds background information to other main characters on several occasions, it thickens quickly and the narrative pulls the reader deeper into a world of mystery and intrigue.
As well as the story was executed overall, the writer still needs to look into the rules for placing commas as several appear to be missing. The plot deserved a larger word count, which sadly, was not in the hands of the author, but she still managed to round it up and give it a proper ending.
All in all, it is a must-read story from the first round of the International Wizarding School Championship! This story is the Judges Pick that impressed the Headmistresses the most, and was awarded five bonus points!
Dear Aunt Molly
Question:
Dearest Molly;
I find myself in a sticky situation. I find myself attempting to raise Mandrakes at home, but the screeching has thoroughly caused me to go deaf. I wore good ear muffs while transplanting them. What should I do before I have to turn to an ear trumpet?
Thanks ever so much!
Wizard in a hearing situation
Answer:
Hello Dear,
I have to say, raising madrakes is a tricky task, and not one for the faint hearted. First, get yourself some heavy duty ear-muffs before the situations gets worse! These days any good herbology shop worth its salt stock those with a rather heavy duty sound proofing charm! A tip I got from the new Hogwarts Herbology Professor, Neville Longbottom! Finally, get yourself to St Mungos! The healers can do remarkable things while you thank Merlin that you are still breathing! A Mandrake cry can kill you know!
Question:
Dear Aunt Molly
As a muggle-born witch, I find certain creatures that most magic-born witches and wizards find completely normal or even harmless, absolutely terrifying. I once saw a garden gnome while visiting my friend in my first year and I was appalled by it. Care of magical creatures is one thing, but seeing those creatures in their own habitats sends a shiver down my spine. I have never been one for animals and things have taken a turn for the worst. What would you suggest?
Answer:
Hello Dear,
I understand that some of these creatures can be daunting. My Daughter-in-Law is a Muggle-Born and she has a fantastic approach to things that frighten or confuse her; knowledge is power! Gilderoy Lockhart’s Guide to Household pests is a fantastic guide to some of those troublesome, and somewhat frightening creatures. Once you have the knowledge you need, face that fear! It cannot have any power over you then!
Question:
Dear Aunt Molly
I am currently dating a Gryffindor sixth year but I don’t want to date him anymore. I liked him at one point but not anymore. I don’t want to hurt his feelings but I’m not happy in this relationship. I have no idea what to do. Please help?
Answer:
Hello dear,
My advice would be to just tell him how you are exactly feeling about your relationship. You can’t string him along, that would be cruel and very hurtful. I know it’s hard to tell someone you just don’t see them ‘that way’ anymore, but sometimes, you have to be cruel to be kind. Imagine yourself in the other person’s shoes; you think everything is fine, then you later find out that that person had just stayed with you for the sake of not hurting you; how would you feel? Oh, and don’t ask a friend to do it for you either! You’re going to have to be a grown up about it. I wish you the very best of luck, I hope that maybe you and the young man in question can remain friends.
Hello Dears, if you have a problem, or you want to ask a question, send an owl over to my personal account. I will do my best to answer them all. You can ask a question about the competition, personal issues, or maybe you would like to send a fictional problem in from any of the Wizarding World characters? All are welcome!
