Creative Corner

Welcome to the new Potter Art page of our blog. You have all worked so hard and sent in so many pieces of art for the creative corner or even just your fanart. We wanted to have a gallery where you could view all of your creations after they have been published in an issue of the WWN. We also have a section on all the places you have created as part of the Creative Corner challenges.

IWSC Character Aesthetics

Can you guess the characters that each Aesthetic belongs to? All of our students worked hard to create some truly great Harry Potter Aesthetics and none of them have names, just clues as to who they represent!

iwsc logo challenge

Thank you for the unbelievable amount of submissions that you all put forward for this challenge. Accio-Broom got the top spots, but there are so many more here. Which is your favourite?

POTTER POETRY

During Season two, in our Issue Four, we had a creative corner challenge that asked for the best potter poetry. The students of the IWSC did not disappoint. We had so many submissions that we couldn’t put them all into the following issue. They all deserved reading, so here they are.

BEAUXBATONS

Beauxbatons are always at the top of their game. They won this challenge by bringing rhymes, comedic timing and of course, all of Potter’s sass!

There’s no need to call me ‘Sir’, Professor – By Janie-Ohio

Sometimes we look for heroes to save the day,

To rescue us, to help us, to show us the way.

Sometimes we need heroes to help us inspire,

To give us something and to light our fire.

Then there’s the hero who shall have no successor,

“There’s no need to call me ‘sir’, professor.”

Insolence by Paceso

“I command you to show yourself,” Severus said,

while his pupil looked on with alarm,

but the parchment stayed blank. Harry sighed with relief,

and then watched as Snape tried every Charm.

“Keep your big fat nose out,” was the Map’s firm reply,

followed quickly by “you ugly git”,

adding “How could a dimwit like you be a Prof?”

“Wash your hair, greasy slimeball.”—“THAT’S IT!

I don’t care if it’s yours or to whom it belongs;

I will NOT be insulted by Padfoot and Prongs!”

Number Four Privet Drive by Hemlock

Number four, Privet Drive, house of known sins,

Known by the tabby cat of changing skins.

No other lighter, no other brighter,

Than the stollen glow from the Put-Outer.

And so here is where the story begins.

Witch (Haiku) by Janie Ohio

Whiz-Bangs, Swamps // Offended Centaurs // Goodbye Toad

There The Wolf Stands by Ashen Moon

There the wolf stands, with eyes of gold. // The light still there, but dull and cold. // Boards splintering beneath shaking paws; // A beat of silence as the dog’s heart thaws // At the sight of his long-lost friend.

And the boy beside him—there! // With emerald eyes and scruffy hair // Long-lost memories of this boy— // That broomstick, his favourite toy. // Now the dog’s nightmare draws to an end.

Shining Ruby by Ashen Moon

Shining ruby sword, // Buried into the beast as // Its last hiss lingers.

HOGWARTS

Hogwarts also put their best poetic foot forwards with a few submissions of their winning.

Malfoy the Coy by QuickSilverFox

There once was a lad called Malfoy,

To attract his crush he was coy,

They bickered and fought,

Until the lad was distraught,

And he lied to save the boy.

Draco’s Bathroom by Always a Dragon

The tap is still on, // The sink filled with water and tears. // I’m lost and I’m scared.

Long Gone by Always a Dragon

I wish they were here. // I see them in the mirror, // But they have long gone.

Him by Always a Dragon

She opens the book // that’s a blessing and a curse, // and ignores her guilt.

DURMSTRANG

Durmstrang took this challenge more seriously than any other school, with probably the most submissions, particularly with our favourite Haiku’s!

Harry’s Haiku Collection by ReadBooksWriteThings

Screams ring through the crowd. His beautiful face is still. My lover, is dead.

A werewolf at five. Tainted, he didn’t belong. Truly a monster.

They call me Loony. Their words should not bother me. Yet sometimes, they do.

What is happening? This diary controls me. I’m losing control.

The first Gryffindor. My blood is not family. They do not own me.

Forgotten, outshined. When will I be important? Why do they not care?

What Kind of Monster by KeepSmiling

What kind of monster am I

That I would risk my godson’s life?

What kind of monster am I

That I would dare forget the wolf within?

What kind of monster am I

To condemn they who were my friends?

What kind of monsters are we

That these children should suffer for our actions?

Mistaken Identity by Keep Smiling

Harry Potter? // Yes, that’s me. // Boy-Who-Lived? // Who’s that? // Certainly not me.

Just a boy // Nothing more // Fight a troll? // No way!// Quidditch is more my game to play.

But It’s Forbidden by Keep Smiling

Is this school insane? // After being out of bounds // Our punishment is to be spent // In the most forbidden place of all? // Heaven help us all!

Something is attacking the unicorns? // Bleeding them dry? // What monstrous beast could do this? // Will no one stop it? // Why must children try?

Do You See Me? By KeepSmiling

Mother and Father are visited by Son // Alice? Frank? It’s me, Neville // Standing in front of you. // Would that you could see // The man your boy grew up to be.

Instead I am doomed to be // A stranger among my family // Mother hands out wrappers. // Father naps // And we leave quietly.

Envy by KeepSmiling

Would that I could // Know a bond so tight // As to risk the rebuke of Gryffindor // All on a hunch.

How is your friendship so strong? // What must I do to be one of your number? // I would pay any fee // For the friendship of you three.

Little Boy by KeepSmiling

“Little boy,” say they, // “No threat could he be.”

I want to laugh // Laugh and agree // But Hogwarts’ grapevine of gossip // Brews a poignant wine for me.

Yes, I know more magic, // But defeating the Boy-Who-Lived // May be a feat // Beyond me.

Mirror of Erised by Keepsmiling

The Mirror of Erised // Always lies // As it paints a picture so sweet.

Its fragrant perfume // Shall fast consume // The one caught in its gaze.

The Entrance Creaks Open by KeepSmiling

The entrance has opened! // Guests have arrived! // They ask if we’ve any treats // We rush to supply!

We care not what colors you wear // Empty tummies and pockets // Are all we require. // Feed yourself, your friends and enemies too // That our labors may meet a satisfying end.

The Sorting of Ginerva Weasley by KeepSmiling

A Weasley I see // (Well, feel if I’m honest) // Yet this one stands apart from the rest

This Weasley I see // Is the first girl // (Yes, it’s true) // But more important than that // Is the House she’ll call home.

Balance in this one more than any other // Alas, Gryffindor is chosen over any other.

The Children Are Coming by KeepSmiling

Welcome my children: // Courageous Reds, // Loyal Yellows, // Intelligent Blues, // Ambitious Greens // And all who are in-between.

May you find in my hall: // Friendships, // Family, // Home.

Piercing by KeepSmiling

Awakened from my sleep // By the hand of an unskilled master, // I swivel and sweep // Awaiting certain disaster.

The flesh that I taste // Is not human in origin // It offers me strength // From a poison // Most potent.

MAHOUTOKORO

The Hootie students got some in too! As always Ninja was there with her own contribution:

Golden Threads by NinjaDevil

“Golden threads bound // Phoenix song surround // Friends and family rose again, // their bodies made of the densest smoke, // Though it was only for a moment, // enough to let the boy pull away // And escape the dark lord once more”

MERITIDAS, SCHOOL OF WATER MASTERY

It is the end of April, the most important time of the year for nine-year-olds born by the Pacific Ocean…magical children that is.  That is when they will find their shell, the shell inviting them to Meritidas, School of Water Mastery.

This shell that called to you will denote your specialty at Meritidas: Care of Magical Marine Wildlife, Inter-cultural Relations with Seafaring Peoples (including merfolk), Manipulation of Weather Patterns, Liquid-Based Battle Magics, Healing, and Potions.  All are honorable fields that you may enter.

Mastery in any of these programs requires at least 10 years during which such subjects as Ethics, Physics of Water and Magic, Biology of Beings within a Water-based Environment and at least one year of Mermish are necessary to form the foundation of more complex topics.

Lessons begin promptly on May 15th, according to human standards.  The first storm of the season will come to your island and an escort will meet you at the water’s edge to lead you to Meritidas, your new home.

I am your Headmistress, Selangeeica, Merchieftess of Atlantis.  Your acceptance of this invitation, given by your meeting of the escort gives you certain rights and responsibilities within the my country which will be explained to you further on the 16th of May.  There is a strict no-tolerance policy for bullying other students regardless of their biological advantages or disadvantages.  Whether a student is fully human or or 85% siren, bullying has no place in Meritidas.  Your physical needs will be provided at no cost to you as it is the hope of our school that future generations will maintain a strength of integrity necessary to sustain peace and health in our world’s oceans.   Are you ready to make a difference?

PACESO – BEAUXBATONS – YEAR 2
KOOLAWONG SCHOOL OF MAGIC

Hidden deep in Brisbane Water National Park, not far from the shores of Waterfall Bay and only an hour north of Sydney, lies the highly-esteemed Koolawong School of Magic.

In 1789, only a year after the first convicts arrived in the newly-established penal colony, an Irish witch, Molly Murry, escaped her chains and fled from Sydney. She stole a canoe and paddled north across the Hawkesbury River into Brisbane Water. There, her canoe sprang a leak. Being unable to swim, she would certainly have drowned had it not been for the fact that an indigenous wizard (gurraji) saw her plight, cast a spell and drew her to safety.

Mollamurri, as she was called by the Guringgai people, was adopted into the tribe and began an exchange of magical knowledge with the locals. Before long, this increased range of abilities attracted the interest of the neighbouring Darkinjung people, who begged to be allowed to join Mollamurri’s lessons, and she realised the need to establish a more formal learning space.

Drawing on her memories of Hogwarts, she and the gurrajis constructed a murrigunya (“big house”) and concealed it from the eyes of the white colonialists, who were then pushing their explorations into the area. Mollamurri, ever-mindful of the privilege of her acceptance into the Guringgai tribe, named the school by the name the gurrajis had already given to the area.

NINJADEVIL2000 – MAHOUTOKORO – YEAR 3
THE BLACK SWAN’S SCHOOL OF MAGIC

Pavel was a wizard. He came back as a ghost to hunt down those who had had him killed. But when that mission was completed, he was lost. Stuck in between where he wasn’t alive nor dead. He had no purpose. So he created one.

He created a school, a school of magic. Somewhere he could teach young witches and wizards about magic. He was the headmaster for a century until he stepped down, allowing new administration. The new headmistress is an alchemist named Chernyy Lebedev. From Russian to English, her name roughly translates to ‘Black Swan.’ She is the current headmistress.

The name of the school changes with its headteacher. Meaning that its current name is this: ‘Shkola magic Chernogo lebedya’ which roughly translates to ‘The Black Swan’s School of Magic.’
Mikhailovsky Castle is in St. Petersburg, Russia and the school specializes in Alchemy and Divination.

Extra fact: Though he is no longer headmaster, tsar Pavel continues to reside there in the castle. Very often, especially during sunset, you can see him through a high window, playing the violin.

ARASULGIL – BEAUXBATONS – EXCHANGE STUDENT
THE SEASIDE INSTITUTE OF MAGIC

The Institute is located on the sandy beaches of Passikudah on the East Coast. It spans a significantly large area, and the school buildings cover the beach, grassy inland areas and part of the ocean, in order to give our students a wide range of practical expertise.

The school houses were modeled after local animals:

Peacock:  In Lankan legend, the peacock is said to be a cunning creature. As told in folk tales, the peacock borrowed the peahen’s feathers to decorate himself for a festival in the jungle, but never returned them to her afterwards, resulting in the peacock being a more beautiful creature than the peahen. Similarly, this house prefers students who are sly and resourceful with what they have.

Whale: Whales are gentle creatures who live in pods, and there are myths that whales will rescue any fisherman or sailor who falls from his boat. This House nurtures the qualities of students

Coral: Coral, an abundance of which protects Sri Lanka’s coasts from rough tides, is actually comprised of many little creatures, who work hard and smart to produce something that may just look like a pretty decoration but actually provides shelter, sustenance and protection to millions of other organisms. This House favours individuals who take the time to make wise decisions, even when they may not be the easiest.

Elephant: Elephants are known on the island for being creatures to respect; at certain religious festivals, an elephant will be kept near the entrance and visitors will kneel at its feet to gain blessings. However, these creatures definitely aren’t tame: when villagers build houses on elephants’ land, they are attacked at night by these animals, who demand their land back. Similarly, students in this House may enjoy being the centre of attention, but will fight for what they feel is right in the strongest way possible.

Our Motto: Learn, Dream Grow.

STAÐUR EINHYRNINGA – PLACE OF UNICORNS

The Place of Unicorns refers to the fact that long before wizards made the castle their school, unicorns came there because it was a place where they could be safe from both the Muggles and Wizards who hunted them. There are many unicorns in Iceland, however they differ a slightly bit from unicorns in Great Britain and the rest of the world. The look much more like Icelandic horses and are found in various colours.

The look much more like Icelandic horses and are found in various colours.
  • Headteacher: There are not many wizards in Iceland and therefore the Headteacher is also the Minister of Magic. His name is “Galdur Vitus Vinur” and he’s 38 years old. Apart from him there are only four other teachers who all teach at least two subjects.
  • Subjects: Care of Magical Creatures is a mandatory subjects for all students along with Charms, Potions, Defensive Spells and Environmental Studies. Defensive Spells is similar to Defence against Dark Arts Class in Hogwarts. Transfiguration, Divination and Astrology and Magical Communication are electives.
  • In Magical Communication you learn the basics of English language as well as other forms to communicate with other wizards. Environmental studies could be compared to Herbology, but it includes the study of different areas of Magic: Water magic, volcanoes, and the healing powers of rocks.
  • Country of Origin and History of School: A long time, Iceland was the home only to Magical Creatures, such as Unicorns, Swedish Short-Snouts, (who live in the mountains), Ashwinders (who live near the volcanoes) and Jobberknolls. There are records of wizards living there in the 2nd and 3rd century, but there was no Magical Community. This changed in the 18th century where wizards began to study the creatures. Some wizard families moved there, but even today there live only about 500 wizards. 2020, the school has almost 80 students. In the past most children have been homeschooled, but this slowly starts to change. In 2019, there were less than 70 students attending to school.
  • Houses and Sorting Ceremony: There are no Houses in Staður Einhyrninga, due to the number of students who attend to the school. Students graduate after six years. First-year students are called “Folald” (Foals); Second-years are called “Stjarna” (Stars); Third-years are called “Gullinns” (Goldens); Forth-years are called “Silfurs” (Silvers); Fifth-years are called “Lúður”(Horn); Six-years are called “Staðurs”(Unicorns) Those names refer to the different states of a growing unicorn:
SELENE BLACKBURN – MAHOUTOKORO – YEAR 5
OLORFEROX  SCHOOL OF MAGIC

Name: Olor-  swan (Latin) Ferox-  fierce  (Latin). The motto of the school is Be Graceful But Fierce. The School is placed in Russia.

Specialised subjects: Figure Flying. This is a very popular form of entertainment in Wizarding Russia, after Quidditch and the Theatre.

Houses and Sorting: The students are given an invitation, a year prior to enrollment. The starting age is ten. They are given information and have eight months to decide and discuss their choice of House with family. After submitting their preference, a small test is taken to ensure if the child will fit in or not. If not, then the teachers help in deciding.

Lebedev:   (Dancing)

Kuzmin :   (Flying)

Andreev:   (Designing)

Makarov:  (Music )

Vassiliev:   (Craft)

This school pays equal attention to extracurricular activities as it does to academics. The House Founders (whom the Houses are named after), found other schools lacking. And with Figure Flying, the new rage among the magical Finland community (who had been inspired by the Muggles), they decided to introduce the sport to Russia.

When they opened their schools, the students were segregated on basis of their hobbies. Each Professor taught one skill. Those with exceptional flying and dancing capabilities were permitted to take Figure Flying as an elective in their Fifth Year.
