Hepzibah’s teachings of the stars

Astronomy is one of the few sciences we share with Muggles, but while Muggles still wonder about the meanings of the constellations and the influences of Mars and Venus on love. Long ago we advanced beyond mere myth-based theories, and into an exact form of interpreting the firmament that has watched over us since the beginning of time.

Astronomy is therefore one of the most ancient doctrines. When the children of magic still hid in caves and traveled the lands, the study of the stars has lead them on safe paths and has provided them with orientation via the dark nights.

In the Middle Ages, when disease was taking Wizards and Muggles alike, herb witches learned to pick their ingredients when the stars were indicating their highest potency. It was through magical herbal remedies and the stars that disease could be kept at bay and the extinction of humankind could be prevented.

Muggles, however, made those herb witches responsible for the sickness that had taken their loved ones and they began to hunt on our kind. Angry witches and wizards swore revenge on the Muggles that had burned children of magic and turned to Astronomy once again to conduct blood rituals under the moons of Mars and bring greed and religious delusion on the continent of Europe. Henceforth, Muggles brought anguish on themselves in the name of what they called their ‘God’.

Nowadays, more materistical witches and wizards have combined the study of the stars with Alchemy — the art of liberating parts of the cosmos from temporal existence and achieving perfection.

Others have turned their back to material things and utilised the stars and planets to refine their interpretations of the strokes of fate. The stars and planets are their guide in making accurate predictions of the future and to give advice to their fellows.

As you can see, the art of Astronomy has defined the practice of magic since the beginning of time. And so, today, we’ll have a look at the the constellations to show you how the stars shine on your paths in life. Treat the advice with care for no prediction is exact, and fate has a way of twisting our paths for its own amusement.

-Your Hepzibah

Aries

Mar 21 – Apr 19

You should put an end to your dangerous activities; if you continue to brew illegal potions under your bed, your headmistress is bound to find out. Try to tame your enterprising nature and beware of the Leo you sold a love potion to. They don’t mean well by you, and you might end up consuming the very same love potion you sold them.

Taurus

Apr 20 – May 20

Have you taken a break lately? Don’t overwork yourself; an essay on werewolfs doesn’t need to be three foot long. You’ve missed all the drama and rumors lately, try to live a little and interact with your fellow classmates! Keep an eye out on Gemini, they might steal your notes on that project you have been working on.

Gemini

May 21 – Jun 20

Has homework has been bothering you lately? Aquarius didn’t deliver on their part of your project? Don’t worry, there’s a Taurus who did plenty of work on the topic you are working on. If they are distracted, you might be able to get a glimpse on their notes. But be sly and cunning about it! They might notice…

Cancer

Jun 21 – Jul 22

Everyone’s drama has caused you sleepless nights lately, but don’t worry, Pisces has got a plan to bring back peace. You need to focus on your next round, don’t let yourself be distracted by Capricorn’s teasing.

Leo

Jul 23 – Aug 22

Your obsession with that Aries has been taken to far. They might not view your undying love for them as a positive thing. Misunderstandings may occur. Help out your Pisces friend, they will thank you for your troubles and the love of your life will be saved from harm that way.

Virgo

Aug 23 – Sep 22

You can only roll your eyes at the love-triangle everyone is caught up in at the moment. You’ve got to focus on the next match! Keep your teammates focused on the next round and save them from bullies, Capricorn is up to no good!

Libra

Sep 23 – Oct 22

You should rethink your plans of revenge on Aries. They are not responsible for your broken heart, even if it seems that way. Reconcile or you will destroy your friendship forever. Keep the secrets of your friends, even if revealing them could give you short-lived satisfaction.

Scorpio

Oct 23 – Nov 21

You’ve been made fun of lately, and because you embarrassed yourself in front of a Pisces, after, being drugged with a love potion someone has been selling illegally. If you want to revenge yourself, make Libra turn on their friends. Beware of Sagittarius!

Sagittarius

Nov 22 – Dec 21

Your carelessness with a love potion has hurt Scorpio’s ego deeply, and a friend’s heart has been broken by a declaration of love that was meant for them, but delivered to the wrong person. Now your friendships are in danger. Keep an eye out on Scorpio, they might take revenge in an unexpected way.

Capricorn

Dec 22 – Jan 19

You are only focused on winning and it’s quite convenient that everybody is distracted by their personal drama right now. If you want to win the next round though, make sure to faze Cancer. Their nerves are already paper-thin and they can snap anytime. Beware of Virgo!

Aquarius

Jan 20 – Feb 18

You’ve let down your Gemini partner in a project. Now they will go to desperate lengths to reach their goals, but you have to keep them from overstepping; cheating is never the solution. Make amends and get your life in order! You’ll be in trouble if you keep being this unreliable.

Pisces

Feb 19 – Mar 20

Someone has been forced to embarrass themselves in front of you, and now they are too blind to see that their revenge plans might hurt the person who adores them. Your heart aches for them, but you won’t be able to make them see reason on your own, you’ll need a Leo at your side to reestablish harmony.

INTRO TO ASTRONOMY

Welcome to Astronomy class, here you will study everything to do with the planets, moons, solar systems, galaxies, and other various celestial bodies. You will discover how they affect each other in their proximity, and how that applies to many other magical subjects.

You will need your telescopes for this lesson, preferably collapsible, and in brass, but any will do! We’re going to study the different planets and stars in our solar system. Everything from Jupiter to Ceres, and their many moons. The moons differ so much, from Titan to our very own Luna.

Ready? Then let’s go to the stars!

Themes

Hogwarts – Andromeda

Andromeda is also referred to as ‘The Chained Maiden’. For Hogwarts stories this round we will be celebrating all our female heroes in Wizarding World! There are some truly great female characters, and none of them need a man to save them! That is the rule, whatever situation that they are in, they must get out of it themselves, no damsels in distress!

Ilvermorny – Gemini

A representation of the twin brothers, Castor and Pollux, and they were warrior brothers! They voyaged in search of the Golden Fleece, they fought in the Trojan War! The theme of your writing will be brothers in arms, and this can be biological brothers, or even brothers that choose each other, Sirius and James, Harry and Ron. Write about how these brothers overcome hardships together (these characters do need to be male).

Beauxbatons – Circinus

This constellation is also known as ‘The Compass’. It speaks of a journey, an adventure of finding our way when we are lost. Your characters must embark on a journey or adventure and overcome together, alternatively they can be lost and need to find their way back. These prompts can be taken literally, or figuratively, meaning that someone can be emotionally lost, go on an emotional journey, or venture out into the world.

Durmstrang – Ophiuchus

This constellation is translated in english to ‘Serpent-Bearer’. For this round, you will be exploring the Slytherin characteristics! This does not mean that your main character has to be a Slytherin; maybe Cedric is going to be a little bit devious in your one-shot, or maybe you will explore the more Slytherin side of Harry? Think of those that are curious, intelligent, seeking knowledge, but they are also power hungry, sneaky and willing to do whatever it takes to succeed.

Mahoutokoro – Orion

This is the warrior and hunter constellation! He is always accompanied by his dogs, who help him on the hunt (one of them is even Sirius—the dog star!). Orion and his dogs were the most talented huntsmen of the time, and for this round you must incorporate that into your stories: a group hunting or working together to accomplish a task or great feat.

Creative Corner

Welcome to The Creative Corner, this is where you can earn points by sharing your other creative endeavours. We have poetry, art and haikus. If you want to showcase something that you have created, Harry Potter related of course, then put it in a doc and send the link to the competition account. Everyone who published something has earned their school 5 points. Please download to see some of the fabulous pieces of art that have been submitted for this issue.

We also have a new creative corner challenge, brought to us by Headmistress Lun! We have a little design challenge for you this time. The topic for the next round is Astronomy so we want you to design the Zodiac Signs! Each school gets two Zodiac Signs, comment with two numbers between 1 and 12 (make sure to pick some that have not been taken by the others) and we’ll inform you of the constellations you will dedicate your designs to.

The winning design will receive 10 points and of course all your artwork will be featured in the next issue!

How Can I Be A Better Writer? – Grammar School Challenge

Time for some more of Headmistress Lun’s creative writing tips! This round we are looking at plots and how to make them more well-rounded. This is a vital skill in good story telling, it is what leaves us satisfied and yet still wanting more. J.K Rowling managed to master this with each Harry Potter novel, leaving the fans craving the next installment, and our Headmistress Lun has been hard at work trying to reveal some of the key ways that we can do this ourselves.

This article will also be the challenge for this rounds grammar school! You will need to write a drabble, 500 – 900 words long, 10% leeway each side. You will be judged on spelling, grammar and punctuation, and the technique we are asking you to use is either a ‘MacGuffin’ or ‘The Hero’s Journey’.

Well-rounded Plots

You do not know where to start your story? How to give your character good motivation to get off his arse and finally do something? A MacGuffin might be exactly what you need! The question is, is it a lazy plot device or a fascinating object?

Never heard of a MacGuffin before? Harry Potter is full of them! Essentially, a MacGuffin is an object or person that drives the plot without having any real importance for the readers. It is of high importance to the characters though and often starts a chain of events.

Let me give you some examples: The Philosopher’s/Sorcerer’s stone is a MacGuffin. The Horcruxes? MacGuffins, all of them! They are objects your hero needs to reach his final goal: destroying Voldemort, destroying Sauron, keeping Thanos from destroying half the universe—the list can go on as they are used quite often nowadays.

If you find yourself struggling to set your plot into motion, a MacGuffin might help you. But beware! They are rarely of much interest to the readers, they are only a tool and once the plot thickens, you should focus primarily on building characters than on extending the lore on your MacGuffin.

Building characters is often done following the concept of the Hero’s Journey. It is a plot device that includes several stages. It starts with the hero of your story being called to an adventure, going through challenges and resisting temptations. This is followed by a phase of metaphorical or actual death and rebirth that comes with a transformation. In the end, your hero finally reaches the goal of their journey and returns back home.

You can find the hero’s journey everywhere in fiction from Harry Potter to Lord of the Rings. It often involves tropes like the unwilling hero and the mentor figure who has to die to make way for the hero and give him motivation. Another motivation often used is the lost lenore trope—the dead love interest. If you plan your story with the help of this plot structure, make sure to write your own version and not a copy from the thousands of stories that have used this tool for plot development before.

A final advice from my side is to mainly focus on building believable and well-rounded characters in a thoroughly developed setting. If they feel real, they are going to behave like actual people and will take you on an adventure of their own volition. A good character can write their own story simply by reacting to their complex world and making decisions based on their character traits and relationships.

STORY TIME WITH HEADMISTRESS CLAIRE

Aquarius

The weather was too atrocious for the fifth years to climb to the top of the Astronomy Tower this night, so I had the children gather in a classroom on the fourth floor instead. When the children had filed into the room, they all seemingly seemed grateful that I had decided to keep them in the warm, away from the howling wind that was blowing an absolute gale outside. I decided that I would tell the story behind the constellation of Aquarius. It was the only one I hadn’t gotten around to telling them about yet, despite the astronomical area being on the curriculum for first year. Subjects that were left out because of the lack of time were perfect for nights when the weather was too poor to be atop the Astronomy tower; as it was tonight.

The wind that was tearing at the top of the tower made it far from safe to be out there, and the thick cover of stormy clouds would have made it impossible to see any of the stars, planets or the beautiful constellations scattered across the heavens. The snug warmth of the classroom became more potent as rain started pelting the windows. Once everyone has found a seat and I called them to attention, I began my story.

“The myth of Aquarius is about a young prince called Ganymede. He was said to be the most beautiful young man in all of Troy.”

Some of the girls ‘Ooo’d’ and ‘Ah’d.’ The boys, meanwhile, rolled their eyes.

“Professor Sinistra? How old was Ganymede?” asked one of the girls.

“In myth, he was actually the same age as you, my dear,” I said, smiling at the girl in question. Some of the boys at the back of the classroom had started talking amongst themselves; all you had to do was give them a chance to start, and they would, leaving me to sharply reprimand them, and remind them that this was still a lesson. Once I had quietened them, everyone settled again.

I continued my story. “One day, the young man was spotted by Zeus, whilst he was tending to his father’s sheep on a grassy area of Mount Ida. Zeus had found Ganymede to so irresistibly beautiful that he took the young man for himself.”

“Please, Professor, did you just say Zeus took Ganymede for himself?” asked one of the boys at the back of the room, a look of sheer horror on his face.

“I did. It was expected of a young man to become an older man’s lover, or slave,” I said primly.

Typical Bellamy. The boy had almost an opinion for absolutely everything. It wouldn’t the first time I’d have to put that certain young man in detention.

“That’s so wrong,” said the student in question again. “Narrow-mindedness will get you nowhere in this life, Mr Bellamy. So please, do be quiet so I can finish this story.” With the miscreant silenced, I carried on with the tale. “Where was I? Ah, ah, yes. One day, the young man was spotted by Zeus, whilst he was tending to his father’s sheep on a grassy area of Mount Ida. Zeus had found Ganymede to so irresistibly beautiful that he took the young man for himself. Zeus then transformed himself to become the form of a giant eagle. He flew down from Mount Olympus to Mount Ida and grabbed Ganymede in his giant talons and carried him off back to Mount Olympus to become his lover and servant. Ganymede then became Zeus’ personal cup-bearer, and was forced to bring Zeus a drink whenever he wished to quench his thirst. Normally, under such circumstances, the young lover would be mentored by the older man, but Zeus didn’t think of such things.”

“To appease the young boy’s father, Zeus offered to him a herd of the finest horses in all the land as compensation for losing his son. As to whether this appeased his father or not, we do not know. It is highly doubtful, but his father had no wish to argue against Zeus, so he accepted his offer graciously. Though, one day, Ganymede decided he’d had enough of being Zeus’ cup-bearer, and tipped away all the wine, ambrosia, and water of the Gods. As legend would tell us, when Ganymede tipped all these away, it fell to Earth, causing massive rainfalls for days on end, that eventually flooded the entire planet.”

“At first, Zeus was angry with the boy and wanted to punish him harshly. But in a moment of self-reflection, he realised that he’d been somewhat unkind to the boy and instead of punishing him, he decided to make Ganymede immortal as the constellation representing the myth of Aquarius.”

Once I had finished telling the tale, the whole class went silent and everyone stared at me wide-eyed. With the exception of Bellamy, who was yawning. For the next forty five minutes, I did a quiz to see who’d been listening to the story. Of course, I ended up putting young Mr Bellamy in detention again, not only for not listening to the story, but for being a disruptive influence. I also went back over the previous week’s lesson.

“Okay class, for homework, I would like a foot long essay about the constellation of Aquarius as well as a diagram of where it is on a star map. To be handed in next Wednesday, please. Last Wednesday’s homework to me as you leave, please,” I asked as the small alarm I’d set to indicate the end of the lesson rang shrilly, breaking the spell of quiet that seemed to have settled over the class for a moment.

Some of the children groaned aloud, I think they thought as this wasn’t a practical lesson, they would get away with not getting homework. I smiled to myself. Who were they kidding? This was O.W.L year. I had to make sure they knew enough to get through their exams. I hated the examinations sometimes, because it took some of my favourite children away from me – especially if they failed, or decided they didn’t wish to study Astronomy anymore. I let out a sibilant sigh as I watched the children disperse back to their dormitories. But for now, I would enjoy teaching them.

The Great Book Review

Durmstrang

A Costly Promotion by Shana

The Author had me intrigued from the beginning. The suspense of Hermione getting a promotion and Ron’s eagerness to support her was overwhelming and refreshing, to say the least. The dynamic between the two characters were done properly and I didn’t find it to diverge from the head-canon I had in mind for them.

In the second scene, I was eager to learn who lay on the other side of the door and was shocked to find that it was Umbridge. (And, we all know how infuriating she can be!) You did her character justice in your work. 🙂 The fact that Umbridge has the audacity to try to steal Hermione work only proves the type of woman she truly is and I cannot express how wonderfully you have written her! Hermione would never stand for such debauchery and the fact that she had the nerve to take back her research and risk imprisonment is entirely within her character. I thoroughly enjoyed this work. 🙂

Simple Really by Sonya HeathDeVito

I thought that Simple Really by Sonya HeathDeVito was an extremely heartfelt story that I loved so much. I love James fics, as they delve into his thoughts and feelings so much, and this was no different. I also love the variety of characters you brought in. I was unclear what happened to Lily at first that caused James to remarry, but looking back it should have been so obvious.

The first thing I love is every interaction all the characters have with Harry. He doesn’t understand exactly what’s going on in this situation. He doesn’t even fully understand that Estelle isn’t his real mother, and that makes for some poignant moments when the characters realize how much Estelle means to them all, whether that’s friend, sister, wife, or mother.

The other thing I have to praise is the ending, for similar reasons. Up until this point, Estelle has really only been mentioned, and we don’t really get a whole lot of info on her personality other than she acts like a mother for Harry. This ending shows her love for her family, and how much she helped and supported James and Harry after Lily died.

I think this fic affected me more than usual on a personal level because I have been in a car accident myself, and so it was easier than it often is for me to relate to the situations. Nevertheless, this was an amazing fic and one that I recommend to everyone.

On the Brink Of Life And Death by Paceso – OVERALL JP

Paceso’s story: ‘On The Brink of Life and Death’ was sent to me and I found that I was immediately immersed in her main character and her aspirations. The characters fit their wizarding counterparts very well, and yet they felt completely whole without the wizarding world.

I think the heart of the story came when Draco entred. Without giving any spoilers, Hermione was effortlessly brought into his world, and they worked together without being forced. I think that their interaction was emotional and poignant. I think this aptly showed Hermione’s more caring nature, and not just her academic prowess, while also showcasing a vulnerability in Draco that often bubbles under the surface, but the character would keep hidden.

The story had a fantastic flow and was well written. I loved the way that Paceso brought the medical element in; Hermione being a medical student grappling with the difficulties of the career that she was undertaking. Paceso’s focus ended up being more on mental health than straight medicine, this I thought was creative approach and a risk as the medicine is more difficult to spot. I thought it lent itself to a emotional tale that I would love another chapter of.

It Started There by NinjaDevil

I’m glad I saved this wonderful story until very last to read! Ninja’s story was so sweet, and I loved every line of it.

I’d never read a HarryxLuna centric story before, so I was curious to see how exactly that would play out. To be honest, I’ve never thought about this as a pairing, but it works, and it worked well in this story.

Indeed it started in a small coffee shop. I loved how Ron and Hermione are in on getting Harry the job at the zoo with Luna, that made me smile.

Luna’s characterisation was spot on, and I loved how even in a Muggle situation, she believed in creatures that aren’t real. I love the tenderness between Luna and Harry when he’s rushed to the hospital after being bitten.

If you love a good bit of fluff, then this is definitely the story for you. Well done Ninja!

Hogwarts

Sew Unfocused by heidlebergchick

Once a Marauder, always a Marauder. Sirius Muggle version is just as sneaky as his magical self, and he can’t help himself but pull pranks and defy every expectation of his father. This is how we are introduced to a young Sirius who has the burden of the picture-perfect family name to carry while reigning his rebellious nature.

The brotherly dynamic between Sirius and Reg in this one-shot makes us wish that blood-prejudice had never torn them apart in their original story. They are like yin and yang, two boys so different and yet so completely made to be brothers that it warms the heart to see how Regulus stands in defence of his older brother.

The end of the story is read with dread and only in the last few lines, the reader breathes with relief at the unexpected turn of events.

Wonderful story full of beautiful detail and emotion!

Honourable Mentions

An Evening That I Will Not Forget – Quicksilver

This rounds Durmstrang judge had a very hard time choosing their judges pick and was torn for sometime between two stories. In such a situation we had to have a quick honourable mention for this beautiful story by QuickSilver. Another MedicalMuggle!AU has shone through this competition, so we highly recommend this story which focuses on Draco Malfoy who ends up in the hospital, but all isn’t how it seems! Blaise will make an appearance, and he has been mistaken for Draco’s boyfriend. This really is an evening that Draco will not forget, and I am sure those flowers helped!

Fallen Brother By NinjaDevil2000

This piece, straight away I knew would be interesting. It hooks you in and you just can’t stop reading. When you judge, there are always people who catch your eye, and you are always impressed with their works. Ninja is one of those writers. But this one has outshone all her other GS entries. She really captures the characters emotions and thoughts in the best ways. Keep it up and I am looking forward to giving more GS submissions more positive reviews! Also, congrats on writing the first fic to make me cry.

FIGURES IN HISTORY

Perpetua Fancourt was a witch who lived between 1900 and 1991. She was sorted into Ravenclaw house during her time at Hogwarts school, and as such was likely quite intelligent. She was credited with the invention of the Lunascope, a device which can be used to analyze the phases of the moon sometime between 1918 and 1925, because by 1926 they were widely available.

The Lunascope was a pretty important invention, because moon charts were extremely difficult to use.She died in 1991, and was given a Chocolate Frog card to commemorate this invention.

Dear Aunt Molly

Dear Aunt Molly,Every time I apparate, I wind up splinching myself! Typically, I splinch my nose off, which results in the other students teasing me and telling me I look like Lord Voldemort. Any ideas on how to stay calm and not lose my nose?Sincerely, Lord Noseless, Leader of the Splinched.

Hello dear, may I ask how long have you been Apparating for? If you’ve only just passed, I would highly recommend a calming draught! If it’s been a while, what is it that is causing you to ‘lose your cool,’ as my daughter-in-law would say? I know it’s not the most comfortable sensation but you must remember to breathe, and clear your mind of all anxiety, and trust that you will get to where you need to go. I hope that helps.

Dear Aunt Molly, I need advice as to how I am to deal with a situation I’ve gotten myself into. There is a young wizard who fancies me who really refuses to back down, and him and his gang of good for nothing friends have now taken to annoying my friends and I. I’ve told him a number of times to stop bothering me and that I am not interested but heaven forbid he ever listens! Now, though, it has gotten so bad that everytime I see him, every fibre of my being simply wants to punch his stupid smirk off his face. What do I do?

—A Ravenclaw who is fed up of being catcalled upon.

Hello dear,

how and why did you ever get yourself into this situation in the first place? Tell him very firmly to leave you alone, and if he doesn’t, he’ll be done for harassment! Be it at school or the workplace. Saying that though, are you sure you don’t like him a little bit? I remember my son-in-law’s parents being in exactly the same position you are now, and they wound up married! Search your heart, you might just find the answer you’re looking for.

Dear Aunt Molly,I’m a young, fairly successful wizardress but lately I have become rather involved in what Muggles call, “Mobile Apps” more specifically interactive visual novels. I have always been an avid reader, so I cannot say that this comes as a surprise really. I feel that I must clarify that I’m not addicted or obsessed–I am functioning well within my usual norm, thank you–but that another issue, a rather magical one, has occurred. Actually, I would not be owling you at all if it hadn’t been for the bending of dimensions and realities that shockingly happened yesterday. You see a fictional character, from one of my visual novels, has come through my mobile screen and into being. He breathes, eats, sleeps, and casts spells. (The latter I believe is due to his character being a wizard in the game.) What should I do? He claims his love for me allowed him to join me, here in the real world, but is it really that simple? Sure his kisses are both refined and tender, and his voice is velvet to the ears, but can I ethically encourage this romance between us?Sincerely,One Befuddled Yet Smitten Wizardress

Hello dear, I’m not sure I’m the right person to ask about this! I think you should perhaps contact the Ministry about this. I think there maybe some dark magic involved! Please be safe, my dear.

  1. You really make it seem so easy together with your presentation but I in finding this topic to be
actually something which I feel I’d never understand. It sort of feels
too complicated and extremely vast for me. I’m looking ahead to your subsequent post, I will try to get the hold of it!
